Breast Augmentation

Discussing breast augmentation and scarring

If you have concerns about scarring following breast augmentation, then your first step is to share your concerns with Dr. Rice. During your consultation, Dr. Rice will discuss your issues about scarring in detail.

The first thing to remember is that breast augmentation is surgery, so completely eliminating scarring from this or any surgery is not something that a responsible surgeon would promise. Nonetheless, most of Dr. Rice's Toronto breast augmentation patients find their scarring is very slight and, in many cases, the scars are virtually undetectable.

If you may be hesitating over a self-improvement you've dreamed of, you're invited to book a consultation to discuss this or any other detail of the procedure. All of your questions are welcome.

Position of incisions after breast augmentation in Toronto

At Dr. Rice's Toronto clinic, he may choose one of these three common incisions during your breast augmentation :

  • Breast crease (inframammary incision)
  • Areola (periareolar)
  • Underarm (transaxillary)

Considerations about Inframammary incision :

If your breasts have enough volume to produce a fold beneath, then the inframammary incision can be successfully hidden there. Some patients prefer this type of incision. You may choose either saline implants or silicone gel implants when this incision site is used.

Considerations about Periareolar incision :

The periareolar incision, once fully healed, is "concealed in plain sight" around the border of the areola where the skin transitions in color and texture to the surrounding skin on the breast. Women who have little breast volume will find it difficult to hide a scar in the breast fold and will be better candidates for the periareolar incision. Saline implants are frequently used at this incision site, but Dr. Rice is also able to use a silicone gel implant, the size of silicone gel implant and the size of your areola will be governing factors.

Considerations about Transaxillary incision :

If a woman has selected saline breast implants, and wants no scarring on the breast whatsoever, then the transaxillary incision is the option. The scar will fade into a naturally occurring crease in the underarm.

What factors control what the final appearance of the scars?

These are the variables that can affect the final healing of your surgery scars :

  • Smoking
  • General health, including pre- and post-surgical nutrition
  • Skin quality, age, and genetic factors
  • Quality of incision
  • Quality of incision closure
  • Treatment of incision after closure

Dr. Rice will ask that you do your part to create the minimum scarring possible. He'll ask you to follow all your pre- and post-surgical instructions faithfully. You'll receive specific information explaining your recovery procedure and how to care for your incisions.

Dr. Rice will, of course, do everything possible to minimize your scars. He'll also discuss with you what you must do, before and after your surgery, to reduce the appearance of your scars. Most patients heal very well after breast augmentation in Toronto, with very slight scarring to disclose the surgery. If you're apprehensive about scarring, it might help to take a few minutes and view our breast augmentation before-and-after gallery. You'll be at ease when you see the results our patients have enjoyed.

The best way to reassure yourself about scarring after your Toronto breast augmentation is to confide your feelings candidly during your consultation with Dr. Rice at his Toronto clinic. He will listen and explain all the factors to you carefully and thoroughly.
