Open and Closed Rhinoplasty Performed in Toronto

If you are not satisfied with the size, shape, or look of your nose, then you may be considering rhinoplasty. Toronto plastic cosmetic surgeon Dr. Sean Brian Rice performs nose surgery and uses the latest techniques and procedures to reshape what is probably the most noticeable physical feature on your face. In addition, nose surgery may be medically necessary in some cases to correct serious breathing problems or birth defects. Rhinoplasty, a commonly performed cosmetic procedure, can be used to reduce or increase the size of your nose, narrow the nostrils, reshape the tip or bridge of the nose, or change the angle between your nose and upper lip.

Open and Closed Rhinoplasty

Dr. Sean Brian Rice performs both open and closed rhinoplasty procedures. Closed rhinoplasty is performed through an incision inside the nostrils, making the cuts virtually invisible. Open rhinoplasty, which is often used for more complicated nose surgeries, requires a small incision to be made across the columella, the thin strip of skin running vertically between the nostrils.

During a rhinoplasty surgery performed at his Toronto office, Dr. Rice gently lifts the skin of the nose off the bone and cartilage that support it and sculpts the underlying area into a more appealing shape and size. The skin of the nose is then draped back onto the reshaped bone structure. After the surgery, the nose is placed inside a splint to help it remain in its new shape. Soft plastic splints may also be placed inside your nostrils to support the interior of the nose and the septum, the dividing wall between the air passages.

Age Does Matter

While some young people are anxious to correct what they see as an unattractive nose, the age of the patient is an important consideration when evaluating whether he or she is a proper candidate for rhinoplasty. If the surgery is performed when the patient is too young, while the nose is still growing and developing, the surgery may have to be repeated at a later date to achieve the best results.
