Rice Cosmetic Surgery

Gynecomastia or what some guys refer to as “MAN BOOBS” is an extremely common condition that can affect up to 80% of the male population.  Gynecomastia is very common during adolescence and can remain during your adult life.  There are many conditions that can cause gynecomastia, however, the greater majority occurs for nonspecific reasons.

If gynecomastia occurs suddenly during adult hood, it is always a good idea to have this checked by her family physician to make sure this is not caused by something, such as cancer.

Gynecomastia Before and After

The male breast is composed of both fatty and glandular tissue similar to a female breast.  How Dr. Rice treats your condition really depends on whether the breast is composed of mainly fatty tissue, glandular tissue or combination of the both.  During your consultation with Dr. Rice we can determine whether your specific condition of gynecomastia is caused by glandular or fatty tissue.  Generally if you feel a hard ball directly underneath the nipple, this indicates that the gynecomastia has at least some component of glandular tissue.

What does the procedure of gynecomastia entail?

There are numerous techniques to treat gynecomastia.  These include everything from an open incision to liposuction.  Generally if there is a significant amount of glandular tissue this requires some sort of open incision.
The goal of an open incision surgery is to hide the scar; generally the scar can be hidden within the nipple areolar complex, with the areola being the pink circular area that surrounds the nipple.  If you think of the areola as a clock the incision is performed between the 3 and 9 o’clock position.  With an open incision the majority of the glandular tissue can be removed. Some of the glandular tissue under the nipple has to be left behind to prevent a depression to the chest.
There are numerous types of liposuction that can be used to treat gynecomastia such as SMART LIPO, SLIM LIPO, BODY TITE, BODY JET, Power assisted liposuction.  Generally liposuction works well when the breast is composed mainly of fatty tissue.  One of the benefits of using laser-assisted liposuction is that the laser can assist with skin tightening
The only way to know which procedure is best for you is to see Dr. Rice, located in Toronto, Ontario, for a consultation.  Generally the procedure takes between 1 to 1-1/2 hours.  Occasionally this can be performed under local anesthetic, however most of the time requires some sort of sedation.
