Liposuction
Liposuction is an effective way to remove stubborn fatty deposits from traditional trouble spots on the body such as the abdomen, thighs, upper arms, and neck. Using suction through a stainless steel tube called a cannula to break up and remove fatty tissue, a surgeon can shape areas of the body into more attractive forms, rejuvenating the patient’s figure in the process. Liposuction has been widely and safely performed in North America since 1974 and remains one of the most commonly requested plastic surgery procedures.

SmartLipo™
Dr. Rice is the first plastic cosmetic surgeon in Canada to offer SmartLipo™. Dr. Rice has also lectured on the technique and benefits of SmartLipo™ to other surgeons. SmartLipo™ differs from traditional liposuction in that the fat is easily melted by the laser. The laser also helps to coagulate small blood vessels, therefore resulting in decreased bruising. One of the most significant improvements over traditional liposuction is that SmartLipo™ will aid in tightening the loose skin, leaving the patient with an enhanced aesthetic result. Occasionally, SmartLipo™ can be used in areas such as the neck and knees as a way to tighten loose skin only.
SmartLipo™ is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that employs the amazing power and versatility of lasers to melt away fat. By using a single laser fiber to heat and disintegrate fat cells inside the body, SmartLipo™ produces significantly less bleeding, bruising, and trauma than traditional liposuction, resulting in far shorter recover times. SmartLipo™ Procedure
SmartLipo™ is most often performed under local anesthesia while the patient is conscious. The surgeon inserts the handheld laser through a small incision in the skin and locates unwanted pockets of fat. The laser beam appears beneath the skin as a dim red light that is visible to the surgeon, allowing for effective location and removal of fatty deposits. The laser wand is waved like a fan back and forth beneath the skin, where it eliminates the fat cells it comes in contact with.
A typical SmartLipo™ procedure lasts about 45 minutes, but yours may be longer or shorter depending on the number of areas being targeted and the amount of fat being eliminated and skin tightening.
