Labiaplasty Surgery

Rice Cosmetic Surgery, Toronto Ontario

Cosmetic rejuvenation of the female genital area has gained great popularity in the last few years. However, even though  women are curious about this procedure many are quite embarrassed to speak to their friends or doctor about it. The most common procedure performed is labiaplasty.
This procedure involves removal and reshaping of the excess labia minora ( or the lips at the opening of the vaginal canal ).  Excess skin at the opening of the vaginal canal can be both a visual and a physical discomfort to women.  Some women or their partners may find the excess skin unsightly, leading to psychological tension during sexual activity. It is not uncommon for women to complain that the excess skin makes sexual intercourse painful.  There can also be physical discomfort associate with large labial skin. Women often complain that they experience pain with sexual intercourse.  They may also complain that they experience irritation of the skin associated with urination ( urine can be trapped in the folds of the skin causing irritation over time). With excessively large skin women may find exercise painful as there may be friction caused by their clothing, some women may also avoid tight fitting clothes such as a bikini.

Labiaplasty Procedure

The first step to correcting this is to have a consultation with an experienced surgeon. Labiaplasty is performed as a day surgery which means you do not need to stay overnight at the surgical facility. The procedure generally takes approximately an hour to perform and can be done under local anaesthetic or with sedation. For the first 24 hours after surgery regular activity should be decreased as to avoid any bleeding.  Regular activities can be started a few days after the procedure but excessive exercise such as a spin class at the gym or sexual intercourse should be avoided for 4-6 weeks after the procedure.

The success of the surgery relies on leaving a natural contour of the labia after the procedure with the scars hidden as much as possible. The excess skin is removed in a pie shape pattern from the inside of the labial skin ( the wet skin part ) to the outside. Sometimes this is performed with a laser.  Bleeding is controlled with a cautery machine and the skin is then sutured in multiple layers with absorbable sutures. The final layer of sutures will be visible and usually dissolve with about one week. The first week after surgery is the most critical and care should be taken not to irritate the stitches or do any activity that may cause bleeding. Normal showers can resume the day after the surgery.
