Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) and Otoplasty in Greater Toronto and North York

Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty is surgery of the upper or lower eyelids intended to reshape the area by removing and/or relocating excess skin and fatty tissue. Some patients suffer from sagging eyelids that make them look tired, old, or sad and undergo blepharoplasty purely for cosmetic reasons. Sometimes, blepharoplasty becomes necessary when the upper eyelids are sagging so much that they are interfering with the patient’s vision or drooping into the eye, causing irritation, infections, and other problems. Meanwhile, puffy eyelid “bags” and wrinkles that form under the eyes can often be treated with lower blepharoplasty. Toronto-based plastic cosmetic surgeon Dr. Sean Brian Rice specializes in performing eyelid surgery for such patients.
Blepharoplasty is performed by making incisions in the eyelid, either from inside the eyelid or in the external natural creases and folds of the eyelid. The surgeon then removes excess skin and fatty tissue from the eyelid and reshapes the area into a more attractive form before closing the incisions. The surgeon may also reinforce the internal muscles and tendons that lift and lower the eyelid to further stabilize and firm up the area.
A blepharoplasty procedure takes from one to three hours to complete, depending on whether one or both of the eyes are affected as well as on the degree of correction that is required. Recovery from blepharoplasty begins with initial swelling and bruising in the first one to two weeks after the procedure, and it can take several months before the final result of the surgery becomes apparent.

Otoplasty
Surgery that reshapes, repositions, or reduces the size of the ears is called otoplasty. Many people are self-conscious about how they look are unhappy about the shape and size of their ears, often feeling that they poke out too far from their heads. Otoplasty performed by Toronto-based plastic cosmetic surgeon Sean Brian Rice can reshape the ears, giving these patients more confidence and a more satisfying appearance.
Otoplasty is most often done to bring the ears closer to the head, a process called “ear pinning,” but it is also useful for removing cartilage and tissue from the structure of the external ear in order to reduce and reform it. Surgeons can also rebuild portions of an ear or create an entire ear that is removed due to traumatic events, such as industrial or automobile accidents.
While ears that appear too big for the head can be particularly difficult for young children – who may have to endure teasing from their peers – to deal with, the age and physical development of the patient is an important consideration in deciding whether he or she is a proper candidate for otoplasty. If the ears are reshaped before the child’s ears, head, and body have fully developed, the procedure may be ineffective and the ears may have to be revisited with additional otoplasty procedures. Neck Liposuction
