Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia, the appearance of excess breast tissue in men and younger boys, is most commonly treated with male breast reduction surgery. In some patients for whom the unwanted development of breasts results from obesity, the excess skin and breast tissue can be greatly reduced through a healthy diet and regular exercise. In other cases, however, male breast reduction surgery is needed to remove the extra breast tissue.
When surgery is required, the surgeon makes incisions in the breasts, then removes excess skin and fatty tissue from the chest. Male Breast Reduction in Younger Patients
While many young and teenaged boys develop large, fatty breasts and want to undergo surgery immediately to remove them, surgery on young boys is not advisable until they have reached a certain level of physical maturity. If done too early in a boy’s physical development, male breast reduction surgery can be ineffective and may even lead to a need for additional surgeries. Also, while male breast reduction surgery can most often effectively relieve the physical symptoms of gynecomastia, men who undergo the surgery should also address any psychological effects they may experience as a result of having the condition and the procedure to treat it.
